Summer festival fever hits the country once again as the dual-site V Festival comes to Chelmsford's Hylands Park and Weston Park in Staffordshire. The event has really hit its stride with Muse and The Verve headlining Winehouse, The Kooks, Alanis Morissette, Maximo Park, Kings of Leon, Chemical Brothers, Ian Brown, Kaiser Chiefs and The Prodigy. Bands swap from one site to the other on consecutive days. The event has come to be known as the safest of UK festivals, encouraging a relaxed, commercial atmosphere that seems to appeal to the kids. Compared to the hippy, spaced-out vibes of Glastonbury and the harder rock element of Reading, the V Festival is mainstream and respectable - don't expect late-night communal parties round a bonfire. By sacrificing atmosphere for security it can seem a little flat when your favourite bands are not on stage. If you like efficiency and home comforts though, camping facilities at the festival include showers, payphones, a cloakroom-type lock-up for valuables and drinking water at various points around the site. Weston Park combines a stately home with 1000 acres of parkland on the border between Shropshire and Staffordshire. Designed and built in 1671 by Lady Elizabeth Wibraham, the house contains a large collection of fine art, tapestries and porcelain that was brought together by the Earls of Bradford over generations. The collections are now in the care of the Trustees of the Weston Park Foundation.
